Quantum Class 19, Thurs 2020-11-05

1 What industry reps wish universities taught students

I'm virtually attending ACM SIGSPATIAL 2020 this week, and asked the Google speaker at the sponsor presentation session. He said that students should know how to design SW for longterm maintainability.

Know the balance balance between perfection and speed and effectiveness.

He also mentioned as a blue sky skill that students know something about quantum computing.

The Oracle rep said, API design, ability to develop modular and maintainable SW that catches and logs errors with sufficient diagnostics.

Everyone mentioned being able to apply ML to different domains. But then, one definition of ML is, "hard and unsolved important problem".

2 Mediasite videos

I just noticed that they were no longer permitted readable; dunno when that had happened. Fixed it. However no one ever complained. :-(

3 Jian Shi guest lecture

Today we are lucky to have Prof Jian Shi, Materials Science and Engineering, to talk about some physics aspects of quantum computing.

4 Google

  1. Google quantum General web site.

  2. Day 1 opening keynote by Hartmut Neven (Quantum Summer Symposium 2020) 29:58.

We'll watch some or all, depending on how interesting it it.

  3. QuantumCasts link to some videos, including the following.

  4. Quantum supremacy explained (QuantumCasts) 4:26.

  5. Introduction to Quantum Chess (Quantum Summer Symposium 2020) 13:53.

  6. Quantum Money (Quantum Summer Symposium 2020) 15:56. Peter Shor. We'll watch the start. It's fun to see what Shor is thinking about now.
