Summary

This is a blog for ENGR-2050-07 Intro to Engineering Design, Fall 2018, RPI.

Its purpose is to summarize info better than LMS.

Its URL is https://wrf.ecse.rpi.edu/Teaching/ied-f2018/ .

Today

Here are LMS files useful for today.

Textbook web site .

  1. Attendance: CTJ
  2. Student information cards: CTJ
  3. Intros: CTJ + WRF- 2 minutes
  4. We will then ask students to briefly introduce themselves to a person next to them.
  5. Syllabus- WRF- 15 minutes
  6. Helium Stick- CTJ 20 minutes
  7. The Design Process- WRF-10 minutes
    1. Big projects have to be done in teams. You cannot do it all yourself.
    2. News story: Metric mishap caused loss of NASA orbiter. The point is that, on large projects, little details can cause disaster. That is the point of this course: to teach you procedures for managing large projects.
    3. My interest, as an RPI professor, is purely selfish. If you learn this, you have a better chance of getting rich. Then you'll be better able to buy RPI new performing arts centers or whatever.
    4. Engineering Disasters and Learning from Failure might be interesting.
    5. Different people have different ways to design; here's one that worked: Wright Brothers Engineering Method (4:45).
    6. Page 9 from the text shows how we do it in this course.
  8. Mini project teams- CTJ- 20 minutes (10 minutes in teams)
  9. Gantt Charts- WRF 20 minutes (10 minutes to work on charts)
    1. Keeps track of subprojects - are they on schedule?
    2. How to Use Gantt Charts .
    3. Do a Gantt chart for miniproject.
  10. Conducting User Needs analysis- 20 minutes- WRF (10 minutes for students to start)
    1. Understanding Customer Needs .
  11. Reminding students about the quizzes- CTJ
